Central Vermont

Randolph & the White River Valley

An independent guide to the town near the middle of Vermont, and the valley around it.
The Town

The town of Randolph, Vermont

Small enough to walk, big enough to have a downtown, a college, and a concert hall. Randolph punches above its weight.

Randolph is a town in Orange County, Vermont, sitting close to the geographic center of the state in the White River Valley. On paper it is a small place, a few thousand people. In practice it has more going on than towns several times its size, which is part of why people who find it tend to stay.

A real downtown

Randolph has something a lot of small towns lost decades ago: an actual walkable downtown, with a main street, storefronts, and a life of its own rather than a strip of parking lots out by the highway. The village grew up as a hub for the surrounding farms and villages, and that role left it with a center that still works as a center.

The college

Randolph is home to Vermont's technical college campus, long known as Vermont Technical College and now part of the state university system. It gives a town this size a steady student presence, hands-on programs in fields like agriculture, engineering, and nursing, and a set of ties to the working economy of the region that a purely liberal-arts town would not have.

The Chandler

For a place its size, Randolph has an outsized cultural life, and a lot of it runs through the Chandler Center for the Arts. The Chandler is a historic hall in the middle of town that hosts music, theater, and community events through the year. A working arts center in a small Vermont town is not something to take for granted, and Randolph does not.

Why it holds people

Put it together, a walkable downtown, a college, an arts center, and the countryside of central Vermont in every direction, and you get a town that gives you more than its population suggests. It is not a tourist stage set and it is not trying to be. It is a real Vermont town that happens to have kept the things that make a town worth living in. For the country around it, see the White River Valley.
